Chronicle – The STiXXclusive Review

Let me just start off by saying that, when I saw the trailer for this movie, I was pretty fascinated to say the least, and I didn’t really have a lot of expectations and/or what to look for. I saw a bunch of reviews saying that it was sub-par, so I hesitated from watching it, and I was just like, “self…maybe I’ll skip this one,” but because a good friend of mine decided to have a night out, I just bit the bullet and finally saw the movie. Here’s my assessment.

TRASH! There’s not that much more to say about it. I felt like I was watching Project X again, but just…worse, and when I compare it to Project X, I mean it as far as the production tactics that were used. Pretty much, a series of handheld cameras are used to show the movie as a whole, which is “chronicling” a series of events happening in the life of a kid named Andrew, his cousin Matt, and his new-found friend, Steve.

So, we all have that one friend that’s just a bit peculiar, and doesn’t know his way in life. It’s sort of like Thomas in Project X; he was just a kid trying to find himself, right? Well sometimes during that self discovery, we may stumble upon some type of unexplainable event or freak occurrence that no one will understand, like in this movie here. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the concept, but I just felt that it wasn’t presented with the best execution. My friend Mirna said it best “I don’t like it, but I don’t hate it…it’s weird.” It`s that perfect word for it. Weird; because it was a different kind of movie in a way, but not really because, if we remember Cloverfield, that whole night was documented on a camera, shaky cam all over the place, but the main people didn`t have superpowers, so it was a bit different.

The script just seemed like it was written in 5 minutes. Acting was so shit, and I hate to use poor language, but to be honest with you, I didn`t think much of the movie. It had its moments with humour and a couple of scenes made me jump a bit in excitement, but I never really found myself INTO the movie as I would have liked to be. It could have been done a lot better. I felt like it shouldn`t even have been a movie in the theatres; it looked more like a college project, just with a bunch of money thrown into it.

Editing wise, it just bothered me that it was jumping all over the place, but at the same time I do applaud the efforts because it was a movie that was essentially supposed to feel like someone was literally holding the camera and documenting everything. I found it weird that literally EVERYTHING was being recorded, and even the girl in the movie was recording everything (seriously, who records their front door? That….isn’t even logical). I found that kind of weird, but I get that it stuck to the theme of the movie’s title.

Ben Parker from Spiderman (Toby McGuire series) told us that “With great power comes great responsibility,” and that’s been evident in almost any and every superhero related movie. What would do if you one day gained some powers and wanted to try them out? Let’s be real, we’d freak out and just go wild, right? I like that they made it feel really human by capturing the raw emotions of how everyday people if they had that opportunity. I’d spas the hell out, how you mean? But, the little things like that made me like it a bit, and it was light-hearted at most parts.

I felt like this movie was rushed a bit. It could have been a fine work of art, but somehow, it never got to that point. This is one movie that was really in the “miss” column of “hit or miss,” but it’s still interesting because of the concept; that’s probably the only thing that saved it, sort of like ‘In Time,’ but that movie was just….lord….trash. But, for now, this is my opinion, this is my review

That’s My Word & It STiXX

  2. I agree with ur friend Mirna, “I don’t like it, but I don’t hate it…it’s weird.”
