(Mixtape) Black Heart – Julian

First and foremost, shout out to Sean (talented guy, get to know him) for sending me this last night, but I did see the name Julian floating around a lot, so that’s why i was somewhat familiar with him, but I didn’t know what his music was about. Sean told me that he was like a Weeknd/Frank Ocean hybrid, and that’s pretty much a bold statement, because they’re two really good R&B artists with two completely different styles, so I had to expect some good stuff, although The Weeknd is like a hit-or-miss artist because he gets annoying really fast.

This mixtape’s production all around is sound. I was digging the vibe and the flow of it, but the vocals really made the mixtape move at a slow pace. I have patience and tolerance for R&B, but the one thing that really kind of annoyed me was that the whole thing sounded like another one of The Weeknd’s mixtapes. I’m all for people having their own musical pursuits, but I just wasn’t feeling the fact that everything right down to the flow of the lyrics were emulating his style. I don’t know if that was the plan, but at the same time, in my opinion, if you want to stand out from the rest and whatnot, you’d want to have your own style, and make the people remember you for what YOU bring to the table.

At least there wasn’t a ton of wailing, and he was actually singing (or rapping, or whatever The Weeknd does) and he showed that kind of versatility that I was somewhat expecting when I was notified of what Julian brought to the table. Overall, It’s either you love it or hate it. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it. Probably something I wouldn’t listen to any other day, but I’ll give him the fact that it provides a really relaxing listening session. You may possibly enjoy this more than I did, so, download, listen & enjoy.

That’s My Word & It STiXX
