Since Harry Potter finished, and Twilight is finishing, it’s time for actual good books with a new audience that’s not as annoying as sin to come out of the woodwork to enjoy the movies again, because BELIEVE ME, I was having no parts in either of those sagas. The only Trilogies I was faithful to were The Lord of the Rings & the Jason Bourne saga (both series are releasing movies this year as well, just so you know).

The Hunger Games trilogy was just recently brought into my presence while the movie was generating a swirling buzz. I’m not going to lie, I never heard of this series at all, like AT ALL, but of course when a trailer comes out and every book store is selling the books for DIRT cheap, then sure, might as well. I should also add that the Game of Thrones TV series is based on a 4-book saga, but that’s TV, not movies, but either way, those will be read as well. The Hunger Games (I’m just going to use THG, because seriously, this is getting out of hand) is supposed to be a thrilling drama with a lot of violence (I’ll get to that in a second), but at the same time, it conveys a bit of romance in it as well (now, I didn’t read the book, so if my inaccuracies offend you, OH. WELL)
What would you do to protect the ones that you love from harm’s way? Would you take a bullet for them? Cover their body with yours from a burning fire? Or, would you volunteer your body in the ultimate human sacrificial challenge? Either way, the likeliness of you dying is….high, but you know, sometimes, you have to do what’s right for the others. In this movie, Katniss Everdeen is the person who volunteers herself in an act of valour (no pun intended for the actual movie) to protect her little sister (who was originally picked, and that’s the only spoiler I’ll give you, if you haven’t watched one trailer or the movie, or read the book). It seemed crazy at first, but if you had a little brother or sister who’s around like 8-9-10 years old, I highly doubt that you WOULDN’T do the same thing, so I can’t blame her.
*SIDE NOTE* ===> Shout out to my boy Dwayne for just telling me that some THG fans were upset because some of the characters were black….now, you people listen to me….We, the general caucus that is Black People, we’ve been eaten by dinosaurs, we’re always the first people to die in horror movies, we shoot each other in movies, we play back up to your white heroes in action movies (unless you’re Will Smith/Denzel/Morgan Freeman), so LET ME BE VOCAL HERE….LEAVE! BLACK! PEOPLE! ALONE! I guess you’ve never heard of diversity or changing times? No? Oh okay…see, I could understand if this was THOR why people were mad that one of the Norse gods was Black (Idris Elba played him), THAT I get, but come on? Really? Don’t make me categorize you in annoying fans already, because so help me…anyways, sidenote over <===
THG is like (if I can compare it to video games) Unreal Tournament. You get a bunch of players from all walks of the world (in the movie & I guess the book, they use Districts) to come together and they only have one objective: Kill all until one is left standing. Pretty straight forward, right? Ya, I thought so too. HOWEVER, not everyone has that killer instinct to just go and slice someone’s neck with a knife or get punctured by an arrow provided by a well-equipped bow, so the human emotions really play into a factor here. As the movie goes forward, it follows Katniss as the main focus, because she’s a tough chick, and she’s pretty much the underdog of this whole thing, alongside her partner (if you could call it that) Peeta (I swore it was Peter, but you know what? Her name is Katniss, I thought it was Catnip, but I’ll let them cook).
Jennifer Lawrence did a good job in this movie portraying the strong female essentially being the Bright White Light of hope for all mankind to cheer for. I didn’t even remember that she was Mystique from X-Men First Class (Thank you IMDB Gods), but she did her thing in this movie.
I’m going to have to read the book, because there were a lot parts where it was really slow, and I was just like “okay, okay….move on,” and towards the end, it was too predictable for me to tell exactly what was going to happen, because of course, it being based on 3 books, they weren’t just going to end it like that, but at the same time, I’ll give this movie brownie points for editing. LOVED the editing (The hallucination scene was crazy, even I was tripping out), but pretty much aside from that, I felt as if there were parts that just dragged on too long, and it didn’t really do much for me, but as I’ve said before, I’m going to read the books. A lot of people are strongly opposed to “watch the movie, then read the book” theory. Even if you read the book, you’ll still watch the movie to see how it was done, and then you’ll get your angry (or not so angry) responses out. I like to avoid the whole getting angry part, so I find this easier. Yes, I already know what happens, but there are 2 more books to read, so then? But, that’s another argument for another day.
This was a good movie, not great. It wasn’t like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It didn’t have that “WOAH” factor with me that high, but it was still alright, and most of THG fans said that it stayed true to the book, and I could understand how it would get a lot of people emotional, because of the killings (or even a certain one death that even had me feel kind of sad, I won’t lie). It was effective in getting through to its fan base, so I’ll give it that much, and in the meantime, at least I have about a year or so to really catch up on the books before the 2nd & 3rd movies come out, so for now, until that time, this is my opinion, this is my review
That’s My Word & It STiXX
