21 Jump Street – The STiXXclusive Review

When people recommend you to watch a movie, a lot of things are said, and when it comes to comedies, which are the hardest movies to make, because the power to make a massive audience laugh is the hardest thing ever (aside from the ability to make them cry). This movie was one of those that had high praise, was given rave reviews because it was supposedly the funniest movie out this year (which isn’t saying much, because it’s still only 3 months into the year), and so I said “SELF, why not go and watch this movie?” Originally, I didn’t want to (I was supposed to see Silent House, but…ya, I wasn’t all for that), but I bit the bullet, and said why not.

High school was the one place where we were told that it would be the best 4 years of life, or the worst 4 years of life (unless those were just my mother’s words). I didn’t go to a school where there were a lot of cliques, but I know that they existed somewhere in the world. Popular kids and everyone else were divided amongst the rest; it was all about superiority and having (essentially) the world (high school) in your hand; a good feeling right? Well, when reality sets in, you’re just another person walking in and out of the doors of high school, and then real life hits you. This is what happened in this movie.

Sometimes life gives us 2nd chances to relieve the years (or year…or 30 days) of what we can’t get back. These two officers (played by Channing Tatum & Jonah Hill) were fresh out of the police academy, headstrong, looking forward to prosperous careers. When it didn’t go that way, they got demoted, and then, they had to do a job involving a high school, which meant two things (or 3): Teenagers, raging hormones, and drugs. Simple as that, but of course things get complicated and whatnot, but people were watching more for the funny parts, and don’t get me wrong, there were some good ones, but the story at times took too long to develop, and some things just weren’t necessary, like it would go at a nice pace, then just stop, and then slowly make its way back up. Like, that was really annoying.

I didn’t know that this was based on a television show until about a few days ago, because I think it came on TV before I was born, I don’t know, I’m just stating not-so-observant-facts here. It wasn’t a comedy, but it was related to two guys doing police work as undercover agents, so that part I guess they stuck true to the original series.

Channing Tatum is probably the worst actor I’ve ever come across, but I will admit that he was pretty entertaining in this movie, and I think he should stick to playing a dumb funny guy because he always has the same look on his face throughout, but in this movie he made it work for him because he was able to have fun and stuff. He hasn’t been in a lot of good movies, and he’s mostly just used as eye candy for the ladies (the male version of Megan Foxx).

Jonah Hill is that guy (I wanted to use another word, but it’s not…really….appropriate), ever since Superbad, and his recent Oscar nomination for Moneyball, he’s just been on it, and he’s showing no signs of slowing down. Comedic actors have really taken a slip through recent years, but Jonah is one of those that never fail to deliver a laugh in the system when it’s required. This movie is yet another example of his work.

Overall, this movie had funny moments. Ice Cube needs to just…stop…being…a corny black dude that just swears a lot, but that’s not always funny, and the main reason a lot of people found this movie funny was because of the shock value (at times), and it was overall “dumb funny.” I enjoyed it for the most part, but it wasn’t THAT funny. This is why I don’t listen to the hype of a lot of people sometimes, because I watch movies different from a lot of people. I get that there’s entertainment, but at the same time, movies like this aren’t even all that special, because it’s like comedies that have been coming out for the past 5-7 years, so it’s nothing new to me, but this is one to watch. I’d rather rent it than see it in a theatre though. But, for now, this is my opinion, this is my review
