I’m going to get straight to the point – this movie is stupid, but it was funny at the same time (at times, but not the whole way through). Suburban communities have always been the source of weird things that happen; it makes me appreciate the inner-city broughtupsy that I experienced (Yes, broughtupsy is a word, don’t argue). Take the cheesiest plot and throw in some funny guys (Ben Stiller….meh), mix in some aliens, and you have this movie.
Ben Stiller plays Evan, who is a man that likes to lead. He’s a manager of a Costco, a loving husband (with a dark secret), and a founder of many clubs. He has no friends, and always has to be the alpha male. We know these type of people – they live amongst us, and some of you are that type of person, it’s okay, you can admit it. When an incident happens, he forms a Neighbourhood Watch to protect the civilians of a small town in Ohio. Oh, the suburbans, and how they love their protection from the outside world. I say this with an inner-city bias, clearly.
This movie was pretty dumb, but really, Vince Vaughn & Jonah Hill made this movie funny, and when you add in the fact that it was written by Seth Rogen, you can pick up on the language and vulgar content which he’s famously known for. It helps that I saw this movie with someone, because had I’d been out alone, I don’t think I would have really looked into it as much, but it was pretty enjoyable for just a dumb movie just to be entertained. I can’t forget about Richard Ayoade’s character as well as the token black guy (I’m still questioning his blackness, because he’s light, bright, and two shades from being white).
Comedies haven’t really had me excited like they used to. I’ve watched some TERRIBLE comedies (American Reunion, I’m looking RIGHT AT YOU), but also some (maybe 2) good comedies (Think Like A Man & Ted). Comedies have changed…they’re the hardest movies to make, but the easiest ones to mess up, so they’re very finicky. I keep giving them chances, but they keep missing…maybe it’s because I’m not white, but that shouldn’t matter; I’m just saying, who knows? OH…the soundtrack of this movie is AMAZING! OLD SCHOOL HIP HOP & RAP! GENIUS!
This is a rental, period. Don’t waste your money, but if you’re in the mood to blow some dollars, by all means. But that’s just my view of it, my opinion of this, because
