How many times in your life have you heard a parody mixtape? One that was filled with songs remixed talking about food, sports references and jokes all around? You usually hear/see a couple of songs by people that just do parodies, but not often to you hear full out mixtapes. That’s what Tha Kontra is. In the 2nd instalment of the series, remaining consistent with the parodies, Kontra tackles on the personas of rappers like: 2 Chainz, Meek Mill, Rick Ross, Drake, Future, Yo Gotti, and Wiz Khalifa.
There isn’t a track that doesn’t have me not laugh. You have to admit that it’s pretty witty to mimic a rapper’s flow and cadence. That’s not something anyone can do and still be entertaining in the process. ‘Hey Look I’m Black’ (parody of Chris Brown’s ‘Look At Me Now’) is one of the best songs on here (including the remix with Sean Micheals aka @ChicagoMadeSean) and the same logic for this song goes for the entire mixtape – if you have no sense of humour or an inkling of sarcastic tolerance, don’t listen to it. It’s funny, but at the same time, Kontra does have some bars. They may not be ‘Hip Hop-ian’ enough to wow and amaze you, but as far as being entertained? Shit, why not?
The commercial Hip Hop of today is essentially a joke itself, so what other way to make a mockery of the mockery than parody? It works, and if you can use a quick laugh, this will do. Another spotlight on the mixtape is another Chicago native (Bella) and she can rap, and I don’t mean like some bullshit – she can flow. The streets are patiently awaiting a mixtape, because her song ‘Youthful’ is one that stood out to me, before it was on the mixtape. So, indulge in that little nugget.
Listen/Download; do whatever – It’s a cool mixtape, so enjoy.
