“First of all I wanna thank my connect” – Jay-Z
And by connect, I definitely mean Nessa over at Dope Drops for putting me on to this guy here. It’s funny, because when she mentioned that Kemizt had been featured on some Blu tracks, I’m surprised I didn’t hear about him beforehand. Listening to this mixtape, I could definitely get the Blu vibe that he gave off, but his voice is more rugged. With the soundbites, beats, and overall feel of this mixtape, it reminded me of Blu’s HerFavoriteColo(u)r project, and that’s one of my favourites. It’s a bit on the softer sides since it deals with the love/hate feelings that a man has for a woman (mayday is one of the better songs that emphasizes this theme). The production on this seemed like it was perfect for his flow because it provides a great balance to satisfy the chilled mood. I’m taking a shot in the dark, but it definitely sounds like there’s some Flying Lotus beats on this one (it’s like I’ve listened to his beats so much that I can distinguish them from the rest. For the people who are the old school Common/Mos Def enthusiasts, I don’t see why you can’t enjoy this mixtape (and this artist in general) since it’s pretty much along the same lines that they brought to the table to establish themselves as not only just rappers, but more so poets. If you check his bandcamp, there’s not a lot of music on there, but hopefully he puts out some music in the near future – I’d love to hear it. Enjoy.
