LA Leakers – The 2013 Draft Picks

It’s a new year, and it’s one year that many see to be one of the better ones we’ve had in Hip Hop, although (depending on how much hip hop you listened to) last year wasn’t all that bad. It’s a new sound that people have had to get their ears adjusted to because of the dominating ‘Trap Music’ and its artists like: Future, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Young Jeezy, French Montana, the emergence of GBE, and a host of others. That’s what’s out there and popular, but for the Hip Hop Traditionalists, there are other artists that could have been heard without having to hear about raps about cocaine, molly, poppin’ bottles, and blowing money at the strip club. Basically, Twerk music.

Most of last year’s sound will make its way to 2013, and there’s no denying that, but I’m on that’s hopeful for the new music that will be coming out this year. A lot of gems to be brought out. This mistape doesn’t reflect all of the good rappers that will be putting out stuff this year, although I will commend the Leakers for including: Freddie Gibbs, Pac Div, and Thurz on this mixtape. Those are all dope rappers who had solid projects last year (Gibbs’ BFK, and Pac Div’s GMB were in my favourites of 2012).

Trinidad James’ hype was one that I didn’t expect for it to take off so quickly, but news spreads like wildfire in the age of the Internet, and although his mixtape Don’t Be S.A.F.E is a pretty good mixtape, no one seems to think that he’s actually a good rapper (I won’t lie, I think he makes good songs, but his skills as a rapper are equivalent to senior citizen pedestrian).

There’s a lot of rappers on this mixtape that have caught a lot of buzz in 2013, and people feel as if they’ll do something big in 2013. If it could happen with 2 Chainz, it could really happen with anyone else. Take a listen, you be your own judge. Enjoy.
